The barriers that separate fantasy from reality are shattered in this sci-fi thriller, where two parallel worlds collide in a paroxysm of deception, madness and murder.
On the thirteen floor of a corporate tower, high-tech visionary Douglas Hall and his highly-strung colleague Whitney have opened the door to an amazing virtual world - circa 1937 Los Angeles. But when Hannon Fuller, the powerful leader of their secret project is discovered slashed to death, Hall himself becomes the prime suspect. To find the answers, Hall must cross the boundaries into the simulated reality he has helped create - and confront the astonishing truth of his own existence...

Based upon Simulacron-3 (1964), a novel by Daniel F. Galouye, and Welt am Draht (1973) (World on Wires), by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a German two-part television film. Simulacron-3 was also published under the title Counterfeit World.

Die Computerspezialisten Douglas Hall und Hannon Fuller haben ein Universum, Los Angeles im Jahre 1937, entwickelt... auf einem Computerchip. Als Fuller tot aufgefunden wird und die Ermittlungen zu Douglas führen, wird dieser zum Hauptverdächtigen. Doch er kann sich an nichts erinnern. Um die Wahrheit herauszufinden, muss sich Douglas nach 1937 begeben. Schnell findet er heraus, dass die Verschwörung dimensionsübergreifend ist. Auf der Suche nach der Warheit stößt Hall auf eine geheimnisvolle Schönheit, die vorgibt, Fullers Tochter zu sein. Douglas nimmt die lebensgefährliche Spur auf...

Der Film ist nach "Welt am Draht" (1973 von Rainer Werner Fassbinder als zweiteiliger Fernsehfilm gedreht) die zweite Adaptation des Prä-Cyberpunk-Romans Simulacron-3 von Daniel F. Galouye und gleichzeitig ein Remake des TV-Zweiteilers. Die Rainer-Werner-Fassbinder-Foundation plant für Mitte 2010 eine DVD-Ausgabe von "Welt am Draht". Obwohl er keine Verfilmung im engeren Sinne ist, übernimmt auch der Film Matrix (1999) Elemente der Grundidee von Galouyes Roman.
