In the small African kingdom of Swaziland, the black mamba is a snake both feared and revered. During summer, these elegant yet lethal snakes turn up everywhere - in homes, schools and cars - and people are bitten every week. Enter Thea Litschka-Koen, a mum and hotel manager who has become known affectionately as the white witch. She and her husband are on call 24 hours a day to rescue and release black mambas when they get too close for comfort. But what everyone wants to know is will they come back again? We follow Thea and her team as they set up a pioneering new scientific project: to track the black mambas they release back into the wild, and find out just how these deadly snakes spend their lives.

BBC - The Last Nazis: Most Wanted (2009)

BBC - The Last Nazis: Most Wanted (2009)
English | XviD MPEG-4 codec | 640 x 404 | Mp3 ~ 128 kbps | 25 fps | 65 min | 755 MB

Most Wanted documents the journey of two young filmmakers who gain access, for the very first time, to some of the most wanted Nazi war criminals still alive in an attempt to discover how their wartime actions have shaped their lives forever.

They are accused of some of the worst war crimes of the 20th century. Now a final bid has been launched to bring them to justice before they die

At first glance, the mug shots appear to be a gallery of roguish grandfathers, but the octo- and nonagenarians are the 10 most-wanted fugitives of one of the most heinous regimes the world has ever seen. They are the last remaining Nazis, and the codename of the hunt to find them – Operation Last Chance – says it all

More than 60 years after the Nuremberg trials put the first of Hitler's henchmen in the dock; the Simon Wiesenthal Centre yesterday released its most wanted list of the remaining Nazi war criminals. The battle to bring them to justice is complicated by a mix of political apathy, legal wrangling, legendary powers of evasion and what Nazi-hunters term "misplaced sympathy" for the craggy-faced men in their twilight years.

"They are old, and the natural tendency is to be sympathetic toward people when they reach a certain age, but the passage of time in no way diminishes the guilt of the perpetrators," said Efraim Zuroff, the Jerusalem-based director of the Wiesenthal Centre. "If we were to put a chronological limit on prosecution, we would basically be saying you can get away with genocide."

The generation of Nazis who fought during World War 2 is almost gone, their lives, their actions, and their crimes soon to be consigned to history forever.

This sense of urgency, and of time running out, underpins The Last Nazis - a landmark documentary series about surviving war criminals living in the 21st century.

It's the last chance to tell these stories, to speak to these men; to enter their worlds; and uncover the impact their existence has had on others. Through intimate and unique access, this trilogy of documentary films tells three compelling stories.

Series 3 - Episode 0: Christmas Special
00:56:53 | 656x368 | XviD, 1327 kbps | AC3 128 kbits | 599 Mb

Every year in the run up to Christmas, millions of birds are killed for yuletide dinner tables. In a huge national mass cull that begins in November and has a deadline of December 25th, more than 10 million turkeys and nearly half a million geese are slaughtered. Many of these will come from huge factory farms working intensely for this time of year. Julia Bradbury examines our attitude to Christmas meat - where it comes from, how it is raised, how it gets to your plate and the history around our eating choices. In a specially constructed restaurant-cum-studio built around a poultry abattoir unit, invited guests watch as the birds are brought in for killing. They are stunned, bled, de-feathered and gutted before their eyes by experienced professional slaughtermen. The birds are then butchered and part of their flesh is cooked and eaten in the studio by the audience. Eight geese and turkeys are brought for slaughter from farms in Lancashire and Essex. The slaughter process continues as normal and each of the birds is checked by an inspector from the meat hygiene service, while a leading veterinary surgeon gives a running commentary of events. The audience participates by eating some of the cooked poultry and discussing their attitudes to the trade in mass produced birds versus those from smaller farms.

Series 3 - Episode 1: Deer
00:56:55 | 656x368 | XviD, 1277 kbps | AC3 128 kbits | 579 Mb

Set against the backdrop of the Highland estate of Balavil, the hunts take us into the little understood world of wild game hunting, part of a no-holds-barred exploration of the issues surrounding the killing and cooking of wild animals for our pleasure and for food. For many, deer stalking is the pinnacle of hunting for sport, but venison is an increasingly popular meat, with the line between hunting for pleasure and shooting for food somewhat blurred. The contributors are trained in rifle shooting and taken out on stalks to see how close they can get to a deer before lining the animal up in their sights and squeezing the trigger. Once a stag is killed, it needs to have its guts removed quickly before being taken off the moor and down to be skinned and the carcass butchered for cooking.

Series 3 - Episode 2: Duck
00:57:10 | 656x368 | XviD, 1075 kbps | AC3 128 kbits | 499 Mb

The nine novice hunters go back to basics, bypass the supermarkets and go out to the Highlands to kill, cook and eat wild duck. Vegetarians, fast food addicts and food connoisseurs challenge themselves to confront the ethical issues of taking another animal's life to feed the nation's ever increasing appetite for meat. They face an intensive gun training session before heading to the ponds to shoot mallard at dusk. Can they deal with the prospect of shooting, plucking and butchering wild animals and do they have the stomach to eat the ducks they might eventually kill?

00:56:36 | 656x368 | XviD, 1210 kbps | AC3 128 kbits | 549 Mb

Shooting grouse is seen as the pinnacle of sport shooting and their meat considered a delicacy. The novice hunters debate the moral and ethical issues surrounding the shooting and eating of a wild rare bird, before experiencing the grouse shoot first hand, firing guns and then plucking and gutting the birds that they have killed. Will this experience change any of their views?

Series 3 - Episode 5: Choice Cuts
00:56:43 | 656x368 | XviD, 1085 kbps | AC3 128 kbits | 499 Mb

BBC – The Genius Of Photography [Complete Set] (2007)

BBC – The Genius Of Photography [Complete Set] (2007)

The Genius Of Photography is the BBC’s most comprehensive look at one of the world’s most influential art forms – exploring every aspect of photography from daguerreotype to digital.
Featuring many of the greatest photographs ever taken – and the photographers who took them – this new, six-part series looks at the history of photography, from Man Ray and Walker Evans to more contemporary geniuses such as Richard Avedon, Sally Mann and Martin Parr.

Ep 1 – Fixing the Shadows
Fixing the Shadows tells the story of the birth of photography itself and the profound question that it raised, and which has never been satisfactorily answered: what is photography for? Detailing the rival methods of the pioneers Henry Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre for ‘fixing the shadows’, the programme examines how photography took its place alongside other new technologies like the railway and telegraph to transform our understanding of the modern world. It describes how pioneer photographers like the portraitist Nadar asserted the status of photography as an art only for this status to be transformed by the Kodak revolution, which put the camera into the hands of the masses who unlocked its potential for surreality, randomness and surprise. Finally it examines
the case of Jacques-Henri Lartigue, the schoolboy photographer who demonstrated the true genius of photography in the hands of the amateur. Includes interviews with Chuck Close and David Byrne

Ep 2 – Documents for Artists
In the decades following the First World War, photography was the central medium of the age. “Anyone who fails to understand photography”, said the Hungarian artist and photographer Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, “will be one of the illiterates of the future”. Precise, objective, rational and apparently machine-like, it was used to promote the radical utopia of the Soviet Union and to bring order and clarity to the chaos of Weimar Germany. But while some prized photography for its ability to objective documents others were using it to explore the irrational, the subjective and the surreal, photography’s natural language. The Genius of Photography – Documents for Artists examines in detail the work of some of the greatest and most influential modern photographers: Alexander Rodchenko, August Sander, Man Ray, Eugene Atget, Walker Evans and Bill Brandt. With contributions from Martin Parr, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joel Meyerowitz and Mark Haworth-Booth.

Ep 3 – Right Time, Right Place
Being in the right place at the right time, the decisive moment, getting in close — in the popular imagination this is photography at its best, a medium that makes us eyewitnesses to the moments when history is made. But just how good is photography at making sense of what it records? Is getting in close always better than standing back, and just how decisive are the moments that photographers risk their necks to capture? Set against the backdrop of the Second World War and its aftermath, The Genius of Photography – Right Place, Right Time examines how photographers dealt with dramatic and tragic events like D-Day, the Holocaust and Hiroshima, and the questions their often extraordinary pictures raise about history as seen through the viewfinder. With contributions from Magnum legends Philip Jones Griffiths and Susan Meiselas, soldier-lensman Tony Vaccaro and broadcaster Jon Snow.

Ep 4 – Paper Movies
The American photographer Garry Winogrand said that he took photographs to “see what the world looked like photographed”. Photographers have always had this as their mission statement, but the three decades from the late 1950’s onwards was the real golden age of the photographic journey. The Genius of Photography – Paper Movies relives the journeys that produced some of the most acclaimed paper movies. The programme takes a fascinating look at Robert Frank’s odyssey through 50s America, William Klein’s one-man assault on the sidewalks of New York, Garry Winogrand’s charting of the human comedy in Central Park Zoo, Tony Ray Jones’s dissection eccentricity at the English seaside, and finally, William Eggleston’s guide to Memphis and the American South. Episode four of the series also examines the arrival of colour as a credible medium for serious photographers, as controversial at the time as Dylan going electric.
Contributors include legendary photographers like William Klein, William Eggleston, Robert Adams, Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, Joel Meyerowitz, Martin Parr and artist Ed Ruscha.

Ep 5 – We are Family
Having conquered the street and the road, photographers approached the final frontier: the family and the self. The Genius of Photography – We are Family is about what happens when photography translates personal relationships into photographic ones, when strangers, celebrities, lovers and children get fed to the camera. It’s also about what happens when photographers turn their cameras on themselves—what they choose to reveal, and just what they try to conceal.
The chronological heartland of the programme is the me decades of the 1970’s and the 1980’s. From Diane Arbus’s freaks (we meet Colin Wood, the manic boy clutching the hand grenade in Central Park) to Richard Avedon’s confrontations with celebrities like Marylin Monroe, from the confessional diaries of Larry Clark and Araki, to the uncomfortably intimate family portraits of Sally Mann and Richard Billingham, the series takes a photographic journey into some of the most intriguing ideas of the photographic self, including an unforgettable encounter as Nan Goldin photographs Joey the transsexual.

Ep 6 – Snap Judgements
The final programme, The Genius of Photography – Snap Judgements, asks what a photograph is worth these days. One answer is $2.9m, the record-breaking price achieved by an Edward Steichen print auctioned at Sotheby’s in February 2006. The other answer is around 1/29th billionth of that figure based on the calculation that some 29 billion photographs will be taken in 2006 by phone cameras alone. Photography has never been so valuable and so ubiquitous. From America to China and on to Africa, the programme examines how the business of being a photographer has been changed by the market’s sudden interest in what was once the poor relation of the art world.
The series culminates in an examination of the impact of the digital post-production techniques that make anything possible, and looks at the rediscovery of techniques which are taking photography back to the 19th century.
With contributions from Jeff Wall, Andreas Gursky, Gregory Crewdson and one of China’s leading photographer Wang Qingsong.

The Day the Universe Changed

The series explores influences of discoveries and shared knowledge on the perception of the Universe and man’s place in it. It looks at times when new knowledge or discoveries has altered that thinking and explores the cultural changes those discoveries effected. The primary focus is on the effect of advances in science and technology on western philosophy. James Burke tells the various stories of important scientific discoveries and technological advances and how they fundamentally altered how western civilization perceives the world.
The series’ primary focus is on the effect of advances in science and technology on western philosophy. The title comes from the philosophical idea that the universe essentially only exists as you perceive it through what you know; therefore, if you change your perception of the universe with new knowledge, you have essentially changed the universe itself. To illustrate this concept, James Burke tells the various stories of important scientific discoveries and technological advances and how they fundamentally altered how western civilization perceives the world. The series runs in roughly chronological order, from around the beginning of the Middle Ages to the present.

Episode Guide

Episode 1 – The Way We Are
Written and presented by James Burke, this 10-part series traces the development of Western thought through its major transformations since the days of ancient Greece. Program one is an overview of the series, showing how a culture’s view of the world around it determines how it sees itself, and is reflected even in the smallest details of its customs and habits.

Episode 2 – In the Light of the Above
Relates that in the course of overrunning Moorish Spain, Christian Europe discovered libraries, universities, optics, mechanics, and natural philosophy. This rediscovery of classical knowledge led to the founding of universities and the replacement of Augustinian philosophies by Aristotelian theories.

Episode 3 – Point of View
Shows that Western Europe’s rediscovery of perspective through the study of Arab optics led to revolutions in art and architecture. The West’s new-found ability to control things at a distance resulted in new methods of warfare and the confidence to make long voyages of exploration.

Episode 4 – A Matter of Fact
Observes that the invention of printing and the advent of cheap paper forever transformed the nature of knowledge from the local and traditional to the systematic and testable. Nationalism, public relations, and propaganda are among the results.

Episode 5 – Infinitely Reasonable
Notes that investigators such as Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton evolved better explanations of natural phenomena than those of Aristotle. Highlights the theories that led to a new conception of how the universe works and of man’s place in it.

Episode 6 – Credit Where It’s Due
Locates the origins of contemporary consumerism in the English industrial Revolution, powered by religious dissenters barred from all activities except trade. The invention of the steam engine, new forms of credit, surplus wealth, and opening markets laid the foundation for industrial society.

Episode 7 – What the Doctor Ordered
Traces modern society’s recognition of the value of statistics to medical advances stemming from responses to the French Revolution and an English cholera epidemic. Identifies the origins of medicine as a science with the discovery of anesthesia, antiseptics, and bacteriology.

Episode 8 – Fit to Rule
Tracks the expectation of change, fundamental to contemporary society, through the developing sciences of botany, geology, and biology to Darwin???s theory of evolution. Darwin???s theory, in turn, has been used as a justification for Nazism, communism, and cut-throat capitalism.

Episode 9 – Making Waves
Points out that studies of the properties of magnetism, electricity, and light have led scientists to the realization that Newtonian physics is inadequate to explain all that they observe. The public, meanwhile, has continued to concentrate on the technological by-products of science.

Episode 10 – Worlds Without End
Observes that over the centuries Western civilization has regularly shifted its conception of the nature of truth. Citing the example of Nepalese Buddhism, a system as complete and satisfactory of Nepal as science is for the West, the series ends with a plea for tolerance.

BBC - Horizon: Can We Make a Star on Earth (2009)

Professor Brian Cox takes a global journey in search of the energy source of the future. Called nuclear fusion, it is the process that fuels the sun and every other star in the universe. Yet despite over five decades of effort, scientists have been unable to get even a single watt of fusion electricity onto the grid.

Brian returns to Horizon to find out why. Granted extraordinary access to the biggest and most ambitious fusion experiments on the planet, Brian travels to the USA to see a high security fusion bomb testing facility in action and is given a tour of the world's most powerful laser. In South Korea, he clambers inside the reaction chamber of K-Star, the world's first super-cooled, super-conducting fusion reactor where the fate of future fusion research will be decided.

BBC- Fast Bucks - How Porsche Made Billions

Over two astonishing days in October 2008 one of the most amazing stories of the downturn emerged. Porsche, the luxury sports car manufacturer, was revealed as the force behind an audacious takeover bid for Volkswagen.

The price of Volkswagen shares rocketed fivefold, and it briefly became the most valuable company on the planet. And hedge funds that had been betting on VW shares falling in the downturn found themselves staring at losses that ran into billions of pounds.

Now the German authorities are investigating. It has been alleged that the much smaller German car maker Porsche manipulated the market, made a fortune and ended up potentially taking over its rival.

Porsche insists it has done nothing wrong. But for years it has quietly stalked its larger rival, buying up VW shares in a creeping takeover and making vast profits in dealings on those shares. It has been highly effective, last year it made four times as much money from share trading than from making its iconic sports cars.

The Money Programme's Max Flint travels to Germany to investigate how Porsche became so expert in playing the market and how it could end up with the biggest prize of all: control of its rival.

BBC-Motor City's Burning: Detroit from Motown to the Stooges

How Detroit housed a 1960s musical revolution that encapsulated a nation in upheaval.

Documentary looking at how Detroit became home to a musical revolution that captured the sound of a nation in upheaval. In the early 60s, Motown transcended Detroit's inner city to take black music to a white audience, whilst in the late 60s suburban kids like the MC5 and the Stooges descended into the black inner city to create revolutionary rock expressing the rage of young white America. With contributions from Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, George Clinton, Martha Reeves, John Sinclair and the MC5.
